Accreditation is the main thing to check before you enroll anywhere online. It means an outside agency has reviewed the school’s academics, faculty, finances, and student services against published standards.
There are two levels. Institutional accreditation covers the whole university. Programmatic accreditation covers a specific program, such as business or nursing. The International Accreditation Council for Business Education, founded in 1997 and recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, accredits business programs at the associate through doctoral levels.
Employers take online degrees seriously when the school is solid. A 2023 Champlain College survey found 84% of hiring managers are more open to online degrees than they used to be. An Excelsior College and Zogby Analytics survey found 83% of business leaders rate online degrees from well-known universities as reputable.
To check a school, look up the accreditor in the US Department of Education database or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation directory. Be careful with schools that claim accreditation from agencies you cannot find in those directories.
