Rankings are one way to compare universities, though they should never be the only factor. Different rankings use different methods, so a school’s position can shift from one list to another.
In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, the top-ranked universities in the United States were Stanford University (2nd overall), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (3rd), Harvard University (4th), Princeton University (6th), and the California Institute of Technology (7th). Oxford held the top spot worldwide. These schools are known for research output and selective admissions, but a high rank does not mean a school is the right fit for every student.
When you apply, you will run into two early application options. Early decision is binding: if you are accepted, you commit to attend. Early action is not binding: you apply early and hear back early, but you can still consider other offers. Early decision can signal strong interest, but it removes your ability to compare financial aid packages, so weigh the trade-off carefully.
Beyond rankings, compare programs, costs, class sizes, and outcomes. Visit campuses when you can, read department pages rather than just the homepage, and talk to current students. A less famous school with a strong department in your field is often the better choice.
